MUMBAI, India, Sept. 28 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541026944 A) filed by Pidathala Sahitya; and Tamilselvan K on March 24, 2025, for Development Of Natural Edible Coatings For Extending Shelf Life Of Fruits And Vegetables.

Inventors include Pidathala Sahitya; Arthy V; Tamilselvan K; and Kalaivani.

The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.

Abstract: The purpose of this project is to extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables by developing natural edible coatings with almond gum and konjac glucomannan. Almond gum, a naturally occurring plant resin, and Konjac glucomannan, a biodegradable polysaccharide, were selected for their film-forming, antimicrobial and moisture- holding properties. Raw material preparation is the first step in the process, which is followed by carefully regulated mixing and pH correction to create a coating solution. After that, the coating is applied by dipping or spraying specific fruits and vegetables, like tomatoes, cucumbers, and apples. By verifying the chemical interactions between the constituents, HPLC (High performance liquid chromatography) analysis ensures the stability of the coating. By monitoring microbiological development, moisture retention, weight loss, and texture preservation over time, shelf-life is ascertained. To improve Performance, the coating's composition, thickness, and drying time are optimised using statistical analysis he collected data. This biodegradable and ecologically friendly approach aim to lessen food waste, encourage sustainability, and provide a natural substitute for artificial preservatives. To guarantee its practical application in the food industry for commercial fruit and vegetable preservation, the modified formulation is subsequently put through extensive testing.
