Abstract: Packaging have necessitated the exploration of sustainable alternatives. This study focuses on the development of edible food packaging using biodegradable materials to address the dual challenges environmental pollution and food preservation. Edible packaging is designed to be consumed alongside the food product or safely biodegrade, eliminating waste and reducing the reliance on synthetic polymers. Biodegradable materials, including polysaccharides (starch, cellulose), proteins (gelatin, casein), and lipids, serve as the foundational components for the packaging. Tbese materials are selected tor their film-forming abilities, barrier properties, and compatibility with food systems. Incorporating natural additives, such as essential oils, antioxidants, and antimicrobial agents, enhances the functionality of the packaging by improving its mechanical strength, extending shelf life, and maintaining food safety. This research explores he formulation, fabrication techniques, and performance evaluation of edible packaging materials. Advanced techniques such as casting, extrusion, and electrospinning are employed to create films with desirable physical, chemical, and sensory properties. Key performance metrics include water vapor permeability, tensile strength, biodegradability, and sensory acceptability. The results demonstrate that edible packaging can offer comparable protection to traditional plastics while significantly reducing environmental impact. However, challenges remain, including cost-effectiveness, scalability, and consumer acceptance. By addressing these hurdles, edible food packaging has the potential to revolutionize the food industry, aligning with global sustainability goals and circular economy principles. This study highlights the innovative potential of biodegradable materials in creating ceo-friendly solutions for food packaging. The integration of edible packaging into mainstream use could mark a significant step forward in reducing plastic waste and fostering sustainable future. Further research and collaboration across disciplines are crucial to overcoming technical and economic barriers and achieving widespread adoption.
