MUMBAI, India, Sept. 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641110121 A) filed by National Institute Of Technology Calicut, An Indian Institute on September 14, 2026, for Development Of Cutting Tools With Inbuilt Force And Temperature Monitoring Through Additive Manufacturing Routes.

Inventors include Basil Kuriachen; Vishnu S; and Jinimol Baby.

The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.

Abstract: ABSTRACT DEVELOPMENT OF CUTTING TOOLS WITH INBUILT FORCE AND TEMPERATURE MONITORING THROUGH ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING ROUTES The present invention relates to the development of a cutting tool with inbuilt force and temperature monitoring fabricated through an additive manufacturing route, enabling real-time, in-situ measurement of cutting forces and cutting temperature during machining operations. The cutting tool is fabricated using metal additive manufacturing processes, allowing the creation of complex internal cavities, compliant regions, and protected signal-routing channels that are not achievable through conventional subtractive methods. Force and temperature sensors (2,3), are strategically embedded within the tool body in close proximity to the cutting edge to enhance sensitivity and accuracy. FIG. 2
