Abstract: The present invention relates to the development and formulation of a herbal toothpaste composition useful for the treatment and prevention of gingivitis and maintenance of oral hygiene. The formulation comprises Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, Calcium Carbonate, Glycerine, Aloe vera, Sodium CMC, Turmeric, Virgin Coconut Oil, Sodium Benzoate, Peppermint Oil, Lactobacillus reuteri, and Distilled Water in optimized proportions. The herbal ingredients and probiotic component provide synergistic antimicrobial, anti- inflammatory, antioxidant, wound-healing, and plaque-reducing activities against oral pathogens associated with gingival disorders. The formulated toothpaste was evaluated for various physicochemical and microbiological parameters including physical appearance, pH, spreadability, foamability, homogeneity, extrudability, abrasiveness, stability studies, antimicrobial activity, gingival irritation, and probiotic viability. The formulation exhibited satisfactory pH (6.8 ± 0.2), good spreadability, excellent foamability, acceptable stability under accelerated conditions, mild abrasiveness, absence of gingival irritation, and significant antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. The probiotic strain Lactobacillus reuteri retained acceptable viability during storage studies. The invention provides a safe, stable, economical, and effective herbal oral care formulation with enhanced therapeutic efficacy and reduced side effects compared to conventional chemical toothpastes.
