Abstract: Heavy metal contamination in water caused by lead , cadmium, chromium , mercury, and arsenic poses a serious threat to human health and the environment. Conventional water treatment methods often suffer from limitations such as low adsorption efficiency, high operational cost, and the generation of secondary pollutants. This study aims to develop and evaluate chitosan nanosponges embedded with iron oxide (nanoparticles)as an efficient and cco-fricndly •adsorbent for heavy metal removal from wastewater. Chitosan, a biodegradable and biocompatible natural polymer, is cross-linked using citric acid to produce a porous nanosponge with a high adsorption capacity. Iron oxide nanoparticles are synthesized separately and embedded into the chitosan nanosponge matrix to enhance adsorption performance and facilitate magnetic separation after treatment. The prepared nanocomposite will be characterized using appropriate analytical techniques, followed by evaluation of its heavy metal removal efficiency under laboratory conditions. The adsorption performance before and after treatment, along with the reusability of the nanocomposite, will be assessed. The proposed material is expected to provide a cost-effective, sustainable, and reusable solution for wastewater purification and contribute to the advancement of nanotechnology-based environmental remediation.
