MUMBAI, India, July 30 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202531024222 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Indian School Of; Coal India Limited; and Bharat Coking Coal Limited on March 18, 2025, for Design And Fabrication Of Lab-Scale Prototype For Real-Time Application Of Bio-Coagulant For Coal Washery Effluent.

Abstract: The proposed system (100) for real-time treatment of coal washery effluent (CWE) with bio-coagulant under continuous flow condition, comprises a mixing tank (1) for thorough homogenization of the bio-coagulant with the CWE, a coal fines thickener (10) comprising a a thickener tank (T) for mixing of bio-coagulant and the CWE, a sludge scraper (12) driven by a motor (5) for continuous slow mixing of the bio-coagulant and the CWE and a launder (13) around the tank (T). In an underflow unit (U) a sludge is continuously collected by gravity through an under-flow pipe (15) connected at the bottom of the tank (T) into the sludge collection tank (17) and clarified water accumulated in the launder (13) is continuously directed via an overflow pipe (18) into the clear water collection tank (19). The proposed invention produces high-quality recycled water without requiring a filtration unit, thereby reducing both construction and maintenance costs. It utilizes gravity flow from the mixing tank to the thickener and eliminating the need for a suction pump for sludge discharge, as the design incorporates a valve for controlled sludge removal. This invention can precisely regulate the flow rate within a wide range of 50-80 L/h, enabling high-volume treatment at the laboratory scale. It enables direct and continuous evaluation of bio-coagulant performance, including efficiency and flocculation behaviour. [Figure 2]
