Abstract: The invention relates to a smart mobility chair used for independent indoor mobility of elderly or physically impaired persons. In particular, the present invention relates to a mobility chair comprises LiDAR sensing, Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) based autonomous navigation, obstacle avoidance and fall detection functions. The LiDAR sensor is utilized for acquiring the information of the surrounding environment for building an up-to-date indoor map. Based on the LiDAR data, the SLAM algorithm enables the mobility chair to estimate its location and construct an indoor map for facilitating the autonomous navigation of the mobility chair. With the target location set by the operator, the navigation controller can calculate the optimal path for the mobility chair to reach the target location. During the navigation, the navigation controller analyses the surrounding environment consisting of both stationary and dynamic objects for avoiding collisions. As a result, the mobility chair can slow down, stop, or change the course to keep a safe distance from the surrounding obstacles. In addition, the present invention also comprises a fall detection system for ensuring the safety of the occupant. The fall detection system can detect any abnormal status of the occupant, such as falling, slipping, or leaving the seat. If any abnormal status is detected, the fall detection system will halt the mobility chair and issue an emergency alert to assure the safety of the occupant. The developed fall detection system in combination with mapping, localization, and SLAM based autonomous navigation, and obstacle-avoiding functions can provide an intelligent mobility platform for elderly or physically impaired persons to ensure their indoor mobility safety.
