Abstract: The present invention relates to an automated flow-based concentration system and method for preparing a low-volume, high-concentration sample from an initially larger-volume and comparatively low-concentration sample. The system comprises a sample receiving arrangement, a controlled fluidic pathway, a concentration element, a flow-control arrangement, a recovery arrangement, one or more sensors, a flushing arrangement, a backflush mechanism, and an electronic controller. During operation, an input sample is transported through the concentration element under controlled hydraulic conditions, whereby at least a portion of a carrier fluid is separated while a desired constituent is retained or concentrated. The controller monitors one or more operating parameters including flow rate, pressure, pressure differential, processed volume, processing time, or other sensor-derived.
