Abstract: The present invention discloses a compact frequency reconfigurable monopole antenna for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The proposed antenna consists of a folded spiral-shaped monopole radiator printed on a dielectric substrate with a partial ground plane. The folded geometry increases the effective electrical length of the radiator while maintaining a compact physical size, enabling operation at lower frequencies suitable for space-constrained wireless devices. The antenna dimensions are optimized using structural parameters L1–L8, ground plane parameter G1, and feed line parameters F1 and F2 to achieve enhanced impedance matching, multiband operation, and improved radiation performance. Frequency reconfigurability is achieved through the integration of a PIN diode positioned between selected sections of the folded radiator. By controlling the ON and OFF states of the switching element, the current path length is altered, thereby shifting the resonant frequencies and enabling operation across multiple wireless communication bands. The partial ground plane further enhances bandwidth and radiation characteristics. The proposed antenna exhibits compact size, low fabrication complexity, low cost, and suitability for integration into modern IoT devices supporting communication standards such as Wi-Fi, Zigbee, LTE, and NB-IoT. The combination of folded monopole geometry, optimized dimensional parameters, and electronic frequency reconfiguration provides an efficient solution for compact multiband wireless communication systems.
