Abstract: ABSTRACT The present invention relates to an intelligent item-presentation apparatus for selectively retrieving an item from a plurality of items retained in an upright row within a flexible container. A sensing array positioned at a base region identifies each item and determines its lateral position by detecting a coded pattern provided on a bottom edge thereof. Upon selection of an item, a pair of rigid deployable members flanking the selected item translates apart to displace adjacent items while leaving the selected item substantially free from lateral loading. Distributed contact over a substantial portion of the adjacent-item height promotes bodily translation and reduces toppling. The deployable members further provide upper support based on a self-buckling criterion to reduce folding of low-stiffness items. The same members can form a semi-rigid internal frame for stabilizing the items during transport. Item selection may be performed through a mobile application, stored schedule, or voice command. A safety mechanism detects obstruction or abnormal drive load and halts movement.
