The application for the patent was published on August 28, 2026, under issue no. 35/2026.

Abstract: [501] An oral cuff-protection device, designated as CUFFGUARD, for preventing damage to inflatable cuffs of airway devices during insertion through the oral cavity is disclosed. The device comprises an upper dental shield, a lower dental shield, and a flexible retrieval tail. The upper and lower dental shields are physically separate and are connected solely through the retrieval tail, thereby forming an open protected corridor between the dental arches during use. [502] The retrieval tail bifurcates proximally into separate branches that attach independently to the upper and lower dental shields in the canine-premolar region and exits through an oral commissure, remaining external to the oral cavity during use. Each dental shield is arcuate, follows the contour of the respective dental arch, and comprises an elongated teeth-receiving groove on the inner tooth-facing surface to improve positioning and retention. The outer surface of each shield is smooth and atraumatic to facilitate unimpeded passage of inflatable cuffs. [503] During insertion of an airway device, the shields reduce or prevent direct contact between the inflatable cuff and the teeth, thereby reducing the risk of cuff damage. The retrieval tail permits easy removal of the device following successful cuff passage and prevents accidental migration of the device into the pharynx or airway. The invention is applicable to endotracheal tubes, double lumen tubes, bronchial blockers, cuffed supraglottic airway devices, and all other airway devices having inflatable cuffs. The invention is particularly useful during insertion of double lumen tubes and in patients with difficult airway anatomy and/or prominent incisors.
