Abstract: ABSTRACT CORRUGATED MICRO-PRISMATIC BRISTLE FOR PASSIVE RADIATIVE COOLING BY TOTAL INTERNAL REFLECTION The invention discloses a bio-inspired reflective prismatic bristle for passive cooling, inspired by the corrugated bristles of the Saharan Silver Ant. The bristle comprises a transparent triangular micro-prism having engineered nanoscale corrugations on its side faces, configured to reflect incident solar radiation primarily by total internal reflection (TIR) rather than by surface coating. Reflection efficiency is achieved by optimising the prism apex angle (in an exemplary embodiment, approximately 72°), refractive index (in an exemplary embodiment, approximately 1.48 to 1.62), and corrugation depth and pitch. Arrays of such bristles may be arranged side-by-side, with vertical gaps to permit airflow, to form a reflective film or surface providing passive solar cooling of an underlying substrate without active energy input or metallic/pigment- based coatings. The bristles may be fabricated by three-dimensional printing, moulding of synthetic chitin, nanoimprint lithography, micro-moulding, or photolithography and etching, and are applicable to building materials, textiles, wearable cooling articles, and electronics thermal management.
