Abstract: ABSTRACT [0026] A novel corner-defected ultra-wideband rectangular patch antenna is disclosed that operates over the frequency range from approximately 2 GHz to 15 GHz. The radiating element begins as a conventional rectangular patch that is subsequently modified by square truncations at the upper corners and arc-shaped truncations at the lower corners. The modified patch is fed by a 50-ohm microstrip line and is backed by a partial ground plane printed on the opposite face of a 1.6 mm thick FR-4 substrate having a relative permittivity of 4.3 and a loss tangent of 0.025. Electromagnetic simulation and experimental measurement confirm that the antenna yields a fractional bandwidth of 152.9 percent, return loss values well below –10 dB, voltage standing-wave ratios below 2, and a measured peak gain of 3.98 dB. The antenna radiates nearly omnidirectional patterns and supports multi-resonance operation, making it useful for ultra-wideband systems as well as WiMAX, C-band and X-band communication links.
