MUMBAI, India, June 30 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641073765 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology on June 14, 2026, for Core-Enhanced Light Gauge Steel Hexagonal Column With Internal Circular Core And Radial Stiffener Reinforcement For Enhanced Buckling Resistance.
Inventors include Konala S K Karthik Reddy; and Kavya S.
The application for the patent was published on June 26, 2026, under issue no. 26/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a core-enhanced light gauge steel hexagonal column for improving structural performance and buckling resistance of thin-walled polygonal hollow steel members. The column comprises a polygonal hollow outer shell, an internal circular core positioned concentrically within the hollow region of the outer shell, and connecting stiffener plates extending radially between the outer shell and the circular core. The internal reinforcement arrangement improves stress redistribution, structural confinement, axial load-carrying capacity, local buckling resistance, global stability, post-buckling behaviour, and load-displacement response under compressive loading conditions. The internal circular core and radial stiffener arrangement collectively provide composite load transfer and multidirectional confinement within the polygonal hollow section. The invention further provides improved stiffness and material efficiency while maintaining lightweight characteristics suitable for cold-formed steel fabrication. The proposed column arrangement is applicable in transmission towers, utility poles, telecommunication structures, industrial frameworks, lattice structures, modular construction systems, and lightweight civil infrastructure applications.
