MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202614091371 A) filed by Farad Power, Inc. on July 28, 2026, for Copolymerization Of Furfuryl Alcohol And Furfuraldehyde.
Inventors include Shantanu Mitra; and Vinod Nair.
The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.
Abstract: Methods for the controlled copolymerization of furfuraldehyde (FUR) and furfuryl alcohol (FA) using defined process architectures are disclosed. In a first architecture, FUR and FA are simultaneously combined followed by addition of one or more polymerization catalysts. In a second architecture, FUR and/or FA are each separately pre mixed with catalyst before combination. In a third architecture, FUR is pre catalyzed and FA is incrementally added at a controlled rate. All architectures also optionally incorporate one or more additives and produce an initial polymer in which gelation or solidification occurs at a temperature not exceeding about 100 °C. Optional additives including carbonaceous materials, tin containing compounds, silicon containing compounds, and biomass derived organic liquids are also disclosed. Crosslinking of the initial polymer is conducted by heating up to about 250 oC to obtain polymer yields greater than about 60% by weight of the combined FUR and FA. Carbonization of the crosslinked polymers at about 800 °C to about 1500 °C yields hard carbon materials suitable for sodium ion battery anodes, and graphitization at about 2400 °C to about 3000 °C yields graphitic carbon suitable for lithium ion battery anodes.
