MUMBAI, India, Sept. 28 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202621045131 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology, Bhilai on April 08, 2026, for Conductive Composite Hydrogels For Electrochemical And Sensing Applications.

Inventors include Banerjee, Sanjib; Verma, Onkarnath; Jain, Amul; and Meshram, Bharatbhushan.

The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.

Abstract: A conductive composite hydrogel comprising eucalyptus leaf-derived graphene-like carbon integrated within a polyacrylamide-based polymer matrix is disclosed. The graphene-like carbon is synthesized from eucalyptus leaves through carbonization and potassium hydroxide activation, producing a porous carbon material with graphitic domains and oxygen-containing functional groups. The composite hydrogel is prepared through redox-initiated free radical polymerization at room temperature using acrylamide, poly(vinyl alcohol), N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide crosslinker, and the graphene-like carbon dispersed in an ethylene glycol-water solvent system. The hydrogel exhibits electrochemical properties suitable for supercapacitor applications, including quasi-rectangular cyclic voltammetry profiles indicative of combined electric double-layer capacitance and pseudocapacitance. The hydrogel further demonstrates strain-sensing and pressure-sensing capabilities with reproducible resistance changes in response to mechanical deformation. The invention provides a sustainable approach to fabricating multifunctional conductive hydrogels using renewable biomass precursors and mild room-temperature processing conditions. (FIG.1)
