Abstract: A computer implemented system and method for multi-mode digital annotation of image-based textual records is disclosed. As shown in Figs. 1A & 1B, the system comprises an image ingestion module, a segmentation module, a manual annotation module, a layer management module, a contextual summary module and an import and export module. The manual annotation module provides a plurality of annotation tools. The layer management module organizes annotations into distinct, individually controllable layers, facilitating multi-annotator workflows with per-layer edit locking. The contextual summary module programmatically aggregates textual labels from annotations to generate a human-readable descriptive of the document's content and the import and export module allows the user to import and export the annotation into machine-readable format. The system of the present invention is a unified platform by integrating a comprehensive suite of tools for complex image-based textual records (i.e., manuscripts) annotation into a single, extensible workspace.
