Abstract: ABSTRACT Composition and Method for Phytochemical-Functionalized Controlled-Release Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Enhancing Alkalinity Tolerance in Rice The present invention is related to a composition of phytochemical functionalized zinc oxide nanoparticles that have been made in conjunction with a controlled-release material and a method of improving alkalinity tolerance in rice . The composition includes zinc oxide nanoparticles prepared using an extract that contains phytochemicals from the leaves of Moringa oleifera in conjunction with a controlled-release material that is agriculturally acceptable. The phytochemical molecules that remain attached to the surface of the nanoparticles aid in their stabilization, dispersion, and compatibility with plant seeds, whereas the controlled-release material controls the release of zinc and minimizes the aggregation of the nanoparticles and improves the adherence of the nanoparticles to the seed surfaces. The method includes preparation of the plant extract, synthesis and recovery of zinc oxide nanoparticles, association of the nanoparticles with the controlled-release material and application of the composition to the plant seeds by means of priming, coating, soaking or spraying.
