Abstract: The invention relates to a composite fiber comprising polyurethane and Eri silk for use in cold-climate textile applications and a method for producing the same. Polyurethane is synthesized via a two-step process involving prepolymer formation from polypropylene glycol and toluene-2,4-diisocyanate, followed by chain extension using bis(2-hydroxyethyl) disulfide to introduce disulfide linkages. These linkages enhance flexibility and enable dynamic bonding at sub-zero temperatures. Eri silk is blended with the polyurethane in trifluoroacetic acid, a single solvent capable of dissolving both components, ensuring molecular-level homogeneity. The polymer blend is processed into fibers using a wet spinning technique involving extrusion into a coagulation bath, followed by air drying. The resulting fibers exhibit uniform morphology, low glass transition temperature, moisture absorption, thermal insulation, and potential self-healing behavior. The invention provides a scalable approach for developing high-performance, bio-integrated fibers suitable for protective clothing and functional textiles in extreme cold environments.
