MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641106552 A) filed by Dayananda Sagar College Of Engineering on September 04, 2026, for Compact Optical Beacon Handshake Communication Link Subsystem For Cubesats.

Inventors include Prashant Kashyap; Dr. Smitha Sasi; Dr. Iffath Fawad; and Dr. Sandeep K V.

The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.

Abstract: The optical transmitter subsystem comprises a OBC controlled pulse generation unit, a high speed switching driver, and an infrared optical emitter including an IR LED or VCSEL source coupled with collimating lens for directional transmission and in order to reduce noise. The receiver subsystem comprises a reverse biased photodiode sensing arrangement, a low noise TIA, analog filtering circuitry, and comparator based pulse reconstruction for detection of low intensity optical signals. Decoding of the signals is done by means of synchronization and frame validation algorithms for recovery of digital information contained in the transmission. The invention describes a novel, compact, and energy efficient communication protocol, which is capable of decreasing the electromagnetic interference caused by conventional radio frequency systems, while allowing directional optical transmission of data for short-range communications, synchronisation, and optical beaconing between satellites. The suggested approach allows achieving efficient acquisition of the signals due to optical amplification, adaptive threshold detection, and frame-based processing, but at the same time keeps the simplicity of design and decreased power usage, necessary for CubeSats. The system described also paves the way for scalability and future use in swarm-based nanosatellite communications and optical synchronization systems.
