Abstract: A communication method, comprising: in the authentication process of a terminal device and a first gateway, the terminal device sends to the first gateway a message indicating whether the terminal device supports a first key architecture, so that the first gateway can accurately determine whether the terminal device supports the first key architecture and reports same to a network side; according to whether the terminal device supports the first key architecture, the terminal device obtains a first key by derivation for security protection; and the network side can also obtain the first key by derivation. The derivation mode of the first key when the terminal device supports the first key architecture is different from the derivation mode of the first key when the terminal device does not support the first key architecture. The terminal device can report whether the terminal device supports the first key architecture, so that the terminal device and the network side select appropriate derivation modes to generate the required keys, thereby improving the communication security.
