Abstract: The present application relates to a communication method and apparatus. The method comprises: a first IMS network element receiving a first call request from a first apparatus, wherein the first call request is used for requesting the execution of a call service with a second apparatus; and the first IMS network element determining that the first apparatus executes the call service by means of using a first coding mode, wherein the first coding mode corresponds to a satellite access mode; and the first apparatus accessing a network by means of a satellite. In the embodiments of the present application, a first coding mode is set for a satellite access mode, and if a media negotiation process is to be executed, since the coding mode of a first apparatus is known, it is not necessary for the first apparatus to participate in the media negotiation process. Thus, a satellite-ground signaling transmission process is reduced by the media negotiation process, such that the efficiency of media negotiation is improved, and the latency of a call service can be effectively reduced.
