Abstract: Provided in the present application are a communication method and apparatus, which can be applied to an extended reality (XR) service. The method comprises: receiving indication information from a second network device, wherein the indication information is used for indicating that a first discard timer for low importance is configured for a terminal device, and the first discard timer for low importance is used for controlling the discarding of data having a low importance degree; and on the basis of a network state, sending first information, wherein the first information is used for determining whether to activate the first discard timer for low importance. In this way, when an access network device has a CU-DU separation architecture, normal operation of a discard timer for low importance is ensured, thereby alleviating the pressure of uplink or downlink data transmission.
