Abstract: The present application provides a communication method and apparatus, which are used for improving the roaming performance of a non-access point multi-link device (non-AP MLD). In the method, a non-AP MLD receives a basic service set transition management (BTM) request sent by a current AP MLD. The BTM request may comprise function indication information of a candidate AP MLD, and the function indication information is used for representing whether the candidate AP MLD supports a tentative association operation. The non-AP MLD may initiate, on the basis of the function indication information of the candidate AP MLD, a tentative association operation for the candidate AP MLD. The present application is applied to a wireless local area network system that supports IEEE 802.11be next- generation WiFi protocols, such as Wi-Fi 8, UHR, 11bn, or Wi-Fi AI, or mmWave, or UWB, or sensing.
