Abstract: TITLE OF THE INVENTION: COMMUNICATION BRIDGE FOR SECURE AND LEGACY COMMUNICATION BRIDGE DEVICES AND RELATED METHODS A communication bridge device (300) comprising a storage (304), a plurality of transceivers (306), a bridge firmware (308), and a microcontroller (302). The storage (304) is configured to store device identifiers and cryptographic parameters. The plurality of transceivers (306) comprises a first transceiver (306a) configured to interface with a PLC (102) and a second transceiver (306b) configured to interface with a communication bus (106). The bridge firmware (308) comprises a cryptographic engine (308b) performing AEAD cipher operations. The microcontroller (302) is configured to receive a communication frame from the PLC (102), extract a destination device identifier from the communication frame, determine whether the communication frame requires cryptographic protection, communicate with the cryptographic engine (308b) to encrypt at least a portion of the communication frame using an AEAD cipher to produce an authentication tag and construct a secure communication frame comprising authentication tag and encrypted portion, and transmit the secure communication frame.
