MUMBAI, India, July 7 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202621056256 A) filed by Dr. D. Y. Patil Institute Of Technology, Pimpri, Pune - on May 04, 2026, for Combatrover: Autonomous Multi-Terrain Combat Surveillance Robot.
Inventors include Miss. Pradyna Randive.; Miss. Rubi Mandal; Mr. Yuvraj Pardeshi; and Mr. Meet Raval.
The application for the patent was published on July 03, 2026, under issue no. 27/2026.
Abstract: This paper presents the design and development of CombatRover, a highly sophisticated AI-controlled autonomous surveillance robot that was specifically developed to operate in the high-stakes military and defense industries. The basic aim of this invention is to increase the intelligence and situational awareness along the battlefields and to reduce, critically, the risk that the human personages will be at stake by automating the reconnaissance in the hazardous areas. The architecture of the system is based on a modular framework of Robot Operating System (ROS) which is a careful design decision to allow the smooth and adaptable consolidation of complex sub systems, such as perception, navigation, and communication systems. This scalability and adaptability to future technological changes is guaranteed by this modularity. The CombatRover system is not vested in a ground-based product but its holistic, synergistic integration that forms a full end to end solution to autonomous ground surveillance. This invention is a tightly integrated hardware and software, unlike systems which will be good in a single aspect, every component is enhanced to operate together with the rest. The uniqueness of this invention is this particular set of hardware platform (multi-terrain) and its advanced software stack. The platform is specifically designed to do two computationally intensive functions at the same time: Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) to provide robust navigation in GPS-denied conditions, and real-time and AI-based threat perception. It is implemented in one, small embedded hardware processor, the NVIDIA Jetson Nano. Being able to map an uncharted space with its LiDAR sensor at the same time, and have its GPU executing a deep learning model (YOLOv5), to examine the camera footage to detect any threats, is an important technical accomplishment, and makes the CombatRover a highly useful and smart piece of equipment in the contemporary defense services.
