Abstract: A clothes treating apparatus, according to the present disclosure, comprises: a drying apparatus which comprises a heat exchanger, a compressor, and a fan, and has formed therein a drain hole for draining condensate water generated by the heat exchanger; a tub which is provided on the lower side of the drying apparatus and stores the condensate water drained through the drain hole; a water level sensor which detects the water level of the tub; and a control unit which starts a drying cycle, operates the drying apparatus on the basis of the starting of the drying cycle, and determines a drying load to be one among a no load and a small load on the basis that the water level of the tub does not reach a preset water level while a preset time elapses after the starting of the drying cycle.
