Inventors include Dr. Vijay Bhooshan Kumar; Raju P Soudatti; Dr. Suryanarayana Prasad A. N.; Dr. Sarath Kumar Gv; and Dr. Kanakasabapathi Subramanian.
The application for the patent was published on October 02, 2026, under issue no. 40/2026.
Abstract: The present invention provides an efficient and sustainable method for recycling thermoset-based fiber reinforced composites, particularly epoxy-based FRPs. The process combines hydrothermal treatment at 150–220 °C and 10–100 bar with selective chemical degradation to depolymerize the crosslinked epoxy matrix while preserving reinforcing fibers such as GFR. Hydrothermal conditions facilitate polymer breakdown, which is further enhanced using alkaline, acidic, or solvent-based treatments to dissolve the resin without damaging the fibers. Recovered fibers and polymer fractions are reused in a closed-loop system to manufacture new composite components using reversible resin systems, enabling reshaping, remolding, and multiple recycling cycles. The method has been successfully demonstrated in automotive applications, including bus and truck fascia, side and rear panels, and auxiliary components. By reducing landfill waste, conserving virgin resources, and supporting remanufacturing, the invention advances circular economy objectives and represents a significant improvement in composite recycling technologies for the automotive sector.
