The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.
Abstract: Disclosed is a chemical-free process for extracting a textile grade fibre from potato haulm, and a blended yarn produced from it. Collected potato haulm is dried and pre-processed, and a binding matrix of the haulm is softened by treatment with an enzyme, in one embodiment a pectinolytic enzyme in an aqueous medium, so as to loosen the fibre without any alkaline or acid retting agent. The loosened fibre is then mechanically separated, for example by decortication and combing, and washed and dried to yield the fibre. Because the matrix is softened enzymatically rather than by chemical retting, the pollution and fibre damage of chemical retting and the water use of water retting are avoided, and the process suits a decentralised scale. The fibre is blended with cotton, in one embodiment about 25% potato fibre to about 75% cotton by weight, and spun into a spinnable blended yarn.
