MUMBAI, India, Sept. 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641106030 A) filed by Saveetha Institute Of Medical And Technical Sciences on September 03, 2026, for Chairside Device To Measure Remaining Dentin Thickness During Deep Caries Excavation.

Inventors include P. Chandana Pavani; Dr. R. Arangasamy; Dr. Josh Kumar; and Dr Ramya Mohan.

The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.

Abstract: Accidental exposure of the pulp during deep caries removal is a common and challenging problem, especially in pediatric dentistry involving both primary and permanent teeth. At present, dentists mainly depend on their sense of touch, visual judgment, and radiographs to estimate the remaining dentin thickness (RDT). However, these methods are not always precise or objective, which increases the chances of damaging the pulp and goes against the principles of minimally invasive treatment. This study focuses on designing and validating a new chairside device that can measure the remaining dentin thickness in a more accurate and objective way during caries removal. The device is based on non-invasive sensing technology and is intended to provide real-time, quantitative readings. This will help clinicians make better, evidence-based decisions while performing procedures. To ensure its effectiveness, the device will be tested for accuracy, reliability, and clinical feasibility through laboratory simulations and by comparing it with existing measurement methods. The evaluation will consider factors such as precision, consistency of results, and safety when used on both primary and permanent teeth models. By providing an accurate assessment of dentin thickness during treatment, this device aims to reduce the risk of accidental pulp exposure, maintain pulp vitality, and support minimally invasive approaches in pediatric dentistry. Overall, this innovation has the potential to improve clinical outcomes and assist dentists in making more confident treatment decisions.
