MUMBAI, India, Aug. 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641101710 A) filed by Chaitanya Bharathi Institute Of Technology on August 22, 2026, for Catalytic Slow Pyrolysis System And Method For Thermochemical Conversion Of Napier Grass Into Renewable Biofuels.

Inventors include M. Mukunda Vani; Sruthi Challapalli; M Neha Shree; P Madhuri; and Umakanta Choudhury.

The application for the patent was published on August 28, 2026, under issue no. 35/2026.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to an integrated catalytic slow pyrolysis system and a corresponding method for thermochemically converting Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) into bio-oil, biochar, and non-condensable gaseous products. The system comprises a reactor arrangement configured to receive Napier grass and a heterogeneous catalyst comprising calcium oxide, a heating arrangement, an inert gas supply arrangement, a temperature control arrangement, a vapour transport arrangement, a vapour upgrading arrangement, a cooling arrangement, and one or more collection arrangements. The method comprises pretreating the Napier grass, mixing the biomass feedstock with calcium oxide, performing catalytic slow pyrolysis under an oxygen-deficient atmosphere, upgrading the generated vapours prior to condensation, and recovering bio-oil, biochar, and non-condensable gaseous products. The calcium oxide facilitates in-situ catalytic deoxygenation, decarboxylation, decarbonylation, and cracking reactions, thereby improving the quality of the recovered bio-oil while enabling efficient utilisation of biomass resources.
