Abstract: Disclosed is a catalytic-gradient zinc ferrite cathode system for oxygen reduction in a microbial fuel cell. The system includes a conductive porous support defining an air side and an electrolyte side of a cathode body. An oxygen-facing region is disposed on the air side and includes ZnFe2O4 catalyst at a first catalyst loading, a first binder content, and retained gas-access porosity. A transition region is disposed between the oxygen-facing region and the electrolyte side and includes an intermediate catalyst loading and an intermediate pore structure. An electroactive region is disposed toward the electrolyte side and includes ZnFe2O4 catalyst at a second catalyst loading greater than the first catalyst loading and a conductive additive distribution. A current collector is coupled with the electroactive region through the conductive additive distribution for collecting current from the electroactive region.
