Abstract: ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a novel Carbon-Capturing Cement Additive (C3A) to capture atmospheric CO2 permanently during hydration/curing process of cementitious materials and at the same time to improve the mechanical properties and durability of concrete. The proposed additive is engineered to contain nano-mineral catalysts, bio-inspired carbonate nucleation agents and moisture-responsive porous microcapsules, as well as alkaline mineral activators which continuously absorb CO2 in the atmosphere during the normal curing process. The absorbed carbon dioxide is chemically transformed into stable calcium & magnesium carbonate crystals, which remain to capture carbon in the cement throughout the service life of the building structure. The invention also combines a smart pH responsive activation mechanism which controls the carbonation process without adversely impacting the cement hydration. The crystallization of the nano- carbonate structure fills the capillary pores, optimizes the microstructures, decreases. permeability and increases resistance to chloride penetration and sulfate attack, while improving compressive strength. The additive can be used in concrete made from Ordinary Portland Cement, blended cement, geopolymer concrete, precast, and 3D printed. This invention offers a practical and cost efficient way for lowering carbon emissions and creating durable, high-strength building materials for infrastructure, structures, pavements and marine use that is scalable and environmentally friendly.
