Abstract: ABSTRACT Carbazole derivatives having anti-microbial activity and a process thereof. The present disclosure relates to carbazole derivatives and process thereof. In particular, the compounds are amide-functionalized/Indole-like carbazole (tricyclic heteroaromatic) derivatives represented by Formula I, having anti-microbial potential. Formula I is optionally substituted at one or more of positions 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8; and each substituent is independently selected from halogen, C1-C6 alkyl, substituted C1-C6 alkyl, C1-C6 alkoxy, substituted C1-C6 alkoxy, cyano, nitro, amino, amido, carboxy, ester, aryl, heteroaryl, and heterocyclyl. The process for preparing a compound of Formula 1, comprising preparing a carbazole core from the diketone/phenyl hydrazine precursor route, followed by activation step on the carbazole hydroxyl derivative, and nucleophilic substitution with an amino alcohol/amine to form the side chain to obtain formula I upon amide coupling using acid chloride and DIPEA in CH2Cl2 at low temperature.
