Abstract: Disclosed are techniques for wireless communication. In an aspect, a sensing receiver node transmits one or more capabilities of the sensing receiver node to configure an antenna array of the sensing receiver node as a sparse sensing antenna array, wherein the one or more capabilities indicate at least one or more types of sparse sensing antenna array patterns supported by the sensing receiver node, receives, for a sensing session between the sensing receiver node and a sensing transmitter node, an indication of a selected type of sparse sensing antenna array pattern of the one or more types of sparse sensing antenna array patterns and one or more parameters for the selected type of sparse sensing antenna array pattern, and configures antenna elements of the antenna array for the sensing session according to the one or more parameters for the selected type of sparse sensing antenna array pattern.
