Abstract: The process for fabricating a brewery spent grain (BSG) derived bioplastic film is disclosed. The process comprises preparing extractive-free BSG powder using an alcohol-acetone solvent mixture, followed by treatment with a deep eutectic solvent (DES) comprising choline chloride and oxalic acid to form a liquid mixture. The mixture is then diluted with distilled water to precipitate cellulose and lignin components, which are subsequently isolated by filtration, washed, and sonicated to form a cellulose-lignin slurry that is cast onto a substrate. To enhance the film properties, the cellulose-lignin slurry or the isolated cellulose can be incorporated into a chitosan solution, optionally blended with a starch solution and plasticized with glycerol. Furthermore, an active packaging agent such as coumarin is integrated into the composite mixture to yield an active, bio-based packaging film.
