MUMBAI, India, Sept. 28 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202511018641 A) filed by Dr. Bansi Dhar Institute on March 03, 2025, for Boron-Functionalized Copper Foam Catalyst And Method For Selective Electrochemical Reduction Of Carbon Dioxide To Alcohols.

Inventors include Dr. Mamta Devi Sharma; and Dr. Demudu Babu Gorle.

The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a boronized copper (Cu) foam catalyst and a method for preparation thereof for electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) to alcohols. The catalyst comprises a porous and dendritic copper foam formed on a Cu foil substrate by electrodeposition and subsequently functionalized with boron through a dip-coating process in an aqueous sodium borohydride solution. The boron incorporation modifies the surface and electronic properties of the copper framework while retaining the metallic copper phase. The resulting boronized copper (Cu) foam catalyst exhibits enhanced electrochemical active surface area, lower onset potential, higher current density, and suppression of hydrogen evolution reaction under CO2 reduction conditions. The catalyst promotes selective formation of alcohol products including methanol and ethanol. The preparation method enables controlled structural and compositional characteristics suitable for sustained electrochemical operation.
