Abstract: The present subject matter addresses delayed and unreliable diagnosis of bacterial versus viral infections, which leads to unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions and antibiotic resistance. The present subject matter provides a cartridge device (100) comprising one or more extraction units, each including a storage well having a chamber with a reagent, a mixing loop, and a membrane, together with a fluid storage unit, functioning as a self-contained lab-on-chip system that automates lysis, labeling, capture, and washing without manual intervention. The present subject matter further provides a processing device (500) including an accommodation unit, an optical detection system, a base tray, and a display assembly to utilize the cartridge device for automated fluorescence detection and quantified biomarker analysis. The present subject matter provides a rapid, accurate, and simultaneous quantification of multiple biomarkers enabling effective differentiation between bacterial and viral infections with reduced turnaround time and elimination of the need for skilled operators.
