Abstract: A biosynthetic polyelectrolyte coagulant for wastewater treatment, a process for its preparation, and a method of use thereof are disclosed. The coagulant comprises a graft copolymer of cellulose derived from Napier grass and at least one water-soluble vinyl monomer, preferably acrylamide. The cellulose is extracted from lignocellulosic biomass of Napier grass by alkaline treatment followed by bleaching to obtain a purified cellulose backbone. The purified cellulose is subjected to free radical graft polymerization in the presence of an initiator to form a cellulose-based polyelectrolyte exhibiting enhanced coagulation and flocculation properties. The coagulant is adapted to be applied to wastewater to effect turbidity reduction and improved sludge settling at relatively low dosages. The invention further provides a method of treating wastewater comprising addition of the coagulant, mixing, flocculation, and sedimentation. The biosynthetic coagulant is biodegradable and reduces reliance on conventional synthetic and inorganic coagulants, thereby minimizing environmental impact and secondary pollution
