Abstract: ABSTRACT Biosensor strips for detection of bacterial contamination This novel invention presents a paper-based colorimetric biosensor strip as an extremely fast, cheap without equipment consumable for detecting bacteriological pollution of waters. The environmentally friendly product integrates microbiology, analytical chemistry, and material science, offering results on water quality in real time without the use of energy, laboratory apparatuses and skilled staff. The biosensor works through pH modulation resulting from metabolic byproducts of bacteria, either organic acids or ammonia. Such byproducts will change the local pH of the strip and there is a visible color change produced because the paper substrate has a pH-sensitive indicator dye impregnated into it. When dipped into the water sample, the strip soaks up liquid through capillary action and starts a reaction that gives separate color outputs-yellow for acidophilic bacteria, blue for basophilic, and green for neutrophilic ones.
