Abstract: The present invention relates to a biopolymer antimicrobial coating system (100) for a medical surface (305). The system (100) comprises a biopolymer matrix (105) and an antimicrobial agent (110) incorporated in the biopolymer matrix (105) to define a coating formulation (115). The coating formulation (115) forms an antimicrobial coating layer (310) on the medical surface (305) after application and drying or curing. The antimicrobial coating layer (310) comprises a biopolymer matrix region (315) and an antimicrobial-agent region (320) that define an exposed outer antimicrobial surface (325). When a microorganism (405) contacts a contact region (410), the exposed outer antimicrobial surface (325) provides a microbial adhesion inhibition zone (415), a microbial growth inhibition effect (420), and a biofilm formation reduction region (425).
