Abstract: ABSTRACT Intravenous (IV) therapy in infants presents significant challenges due to their delicate veins, limited communication abilities, and increased sensitivity to medical procedures. One of the most common and potentially serious complications is infiltration-when TV fluids accidentally leak into the surrounding tissue. This condition, if undetected, can lead to swelling, pain, and tissue damage, and in severe cases, necrosis. Our project introduces an innovative Smart IV Infiltration Monitoring System specifically designed for infants and neonates. This wearable solution integrates optical and temperature sensors within a soft, biocompatible adhesive patch that is applied near the IV site. These sensors continuously monitor for subtle changes in skin reflectance and temperah1re, which are key early indicators of fluid leakage. The collected data is processed in real-time by an onboard microcontroller. When deviations cross a critical threshold, the system triggers local alerts via LED and buzzer indicators to inform caregivers instantly. Unlike traditional methods that rely on periodic manual inspection, our system offers continuous, automated surveillance of the IV site, enabling immediate action before visible symptoms develop. This early intervention capability reduces the risk of long-term complications, supports better clinical outcomes, and enhances patient safety. The device is not only cost-effective and reliable but also tailored for use in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), pediatric hospital wards, and home care environments. It is scalable for broader adoption and serves as a model for integrating simple sensor technologies to address complex medical challenges in pediatric care.
