Abstract: The present invention relates to a biogenic nanoparticle system designed for the degradation of microplastics in soil, utilizing plant-derived nanoparticles synthesized through a green process. These nanoparticles are formed by the interaction of bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols and flavonoids, extracted from plants with metal ions selected from silver, titanium, or zinc. The nanoparticles are configured to attach to microplastic surfaces in soil and generate reactive molecules, including reactive oxygen species (ROS), upon exposure to environmental conditions like sunlight or moisture. These reactive molecules facilitate the chemical degradation of the microplastic polymer matrix into smaller components. The invention also encompasses a method for synthesizing these nanoparticles, involving the preparation of plant extracts and their combination with metal ions under controlled conditions, with characterization techniques such as Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) or Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) employed to analyze the nanoparticles' morphology and size.
