Abstract: A bioactive geogrid reinforcement system for stabilizing soil slopes has been proposed by integrating mechanical and biological reinforcement as shown in figure-1. The system comprises a flat, rectangular geogrid mesh with square or hexagonal apertures (10–50 mm) and biodegradable seed pods positioned at nodal intersections. Each seed pod contains 1–3 neem (Azadirachta indica) seeds, a water-absorbent hydrogel, mycorrhizal fungi, and organic fertilizers, all encapsulated in a lignocellulosic matrix with a biodegradable shell. Detachable anchoring spikes secure the geogrid to the slope while maintaining flexibility for transportation and field installation. Upon rainfall or irrigation, the hydrogel activates, seed pods degrade, and neem roots germinate, penetrating the soil and interlocking with the geogrid to form a reinforced composite matrix. The system provides immediate tensile stabilization and long-term erosion resistance, enhances soil fertility, promotes biodiversity, and supports carbon sequestration. Applications include highway embankments, riverbanks, mining sites, terraced farming, and other slopes requiring sustainable stabilization solutions.
