MUMBAI, India, Sept. 28 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611100475 A) filed by Chandigarh University on August 20, 2026, for Biodegradable Water-Resistant Smart Packaging Film Forfluorescence-Based Food Spoilage Detection.

Inventors include Mahima Purohit; Dr. Ruchi Bharti; and Dr. Renu Sharma.

The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a biodegradable water-resistant smart packaging film for real-time fluorescence-based detection of spoilage in protein-rich food products. The smart packaging film comprises a polyvinyl alcohol polymer matrix embedded with plant-derived carbon quantum dots synthesized from Neolamarckia cadamba leaf biomass, a citric acid crosslinking agent, and a glycerol plasticizer. The film is thermally crosslinked to improve water resistance, structural integrity, and flexibility while retaining the fluorescence characteristics of the embedded carbon quantum dots. When exposed to volatile biogenic amines generated during microbial spoilage of protein-rich food products, the carbon quantum dots undergo fluorescence quenching under ultraviolet illumination, thereby providing a non-destructive visual indication of food freshness.
