MUMBAI, India, Sept. 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611088550 A) filed by K. R. Mangalam University on July 21, 2026, for Biodegradable Stretch Textile Of Natural Silk And A Non-Elastomeric Stretch Fibre, And Garment.

Inventors include Dr. Ritika Choudhary; and Indrajeet Kumar.

The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.

Abstract: A biodegradable stretch textile and a garment are disclosed. The textile comprises a composite yarn of a natural silk fibre and a non-elastomeric stretch fibre, knitted into a structure configured to provide multidirectional, substantially three-hundred-and-sixty-degree stretch with dimensional stability and elastic recovery. The non- elastomeric stretch fibre provides the elastic recovery in the absence of a synthetic elastomer such as elastane, spandex or polyurethane, while the natural silk fibre provides softness, breathability and thermal regulation. Because no synthetic elastomer is present, the textile is substantially biodegradable and releases substantially no microplastic on laundering, so the two fibres cooperate to give a comfortable, breathable, multidirectional stretch textile without the microplastic shedding associated with elastane. A garment, such as a t-shirt, comprises the textile, which is made by forming the composite yarn and knitting it into the stretch structure.
