MUMBAI, India, Sept. 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611088561 A) filed by K. R. Mangalam University on July 21, 2026, for Biodegradable Starch-Bonded Cotton Felt From Muslin Textile Waste And Method Of Production.

Inventors include Versha Verma; and Annu Yadav.

The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.

Abstract: A biodegradable cotton felt and a method of producing it are disclosed. The felt comprises shredded cotton fibres recovered from muslin textile waste, such as fashion- studio toile waste, bonded by a natural starch binder into a cohesive sheet that is free of synthetic binder and is fully biodegradable. Because cotton does not self-felt, the gelatinised starch and compression cooperate to lock the entangled fibres into a self-supporting sheet without needle punching, hydroentanglement, thermal bonding or industrial machinery. The felt may comprise several bonded layers and may carry plant seeds to form a plantable substrate that decomposes in soil while supporting plant growth. It is produced by sorting and shredding the muslin waste, gelatinising a corn or wheat starch at five to twenty percent in water, forming and binder-coating fibre layers, compressing and drying.
