MUMBAI, India, July 30 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641046212 A) filed by Syntara Packaging Private Limited on April 10, 2026, for Biodegradable Rice Husk–based Composite And Process For Preparing Compostable Packaging Containers.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a biodegradable composite composition and a method for preparing the same, suitable for manufacturing compostable packaging containers for cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) applications. The composite comprises 30–55 wt% chemically modified rice husk obtained through sequential alkali and acrylic acid treatment, 30–45 wt% polylactic acid (PLA), 10–25 wt% polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), 0.5–2 wt% compatibilizer, 1–2 wt% silane coupling agent and 0.05-0.15% dicumyl peroxide (DCP). The chemical modification reduces hydrophilicity and enhances interfacial compatibility with the polymer matrix. The compatibilizer and coupling agent improve dispersion and adhesion between the filler and polymer phases. The composite is prepared by melt compounding using a twin-screw extruder followed by injection moulding. The material exhibits improved mechanical properties, reduced water absorption, and enhanced stability, and is capable of biodegradation under composting conditions.
