Abstract: The present invention relates to an eco-friendly biodegradable plastic composite which is prepared by utilizing agri-waste fibers and ocean-derived biopolymers and having improved mechanical strength, water resisting property and biodegradable property. A naturally-extracted alginate, agar, carrageenan and bio-cellulose extracted from marine algae are used in conjunction with the use of agricultural residues like rice husk, sugarcane bagasse, coconut coir, banana fiber or wheat straw. A new feature of the invention is the use of Microbial Activation Capsules (MACs) filled with dormant, micro-biodegradable microorganisms contained in biodegradable microspheres. During use, these capsules are inactive and only decompose when the product is under composting or moisture conditions in the land-filling area so that degradation occurs sooner, but without negatively impacting product service life. Also, the reinforcement with the marine shells (bioresin) and nanocellulose from agricultural waste enhances tensile strength, flexibility, and thermal stability. The durability is further improved by a naturally derived bio-crosslinking network, without compromising complete biodegradability. Natural antimicrobial plant extracts and color pigments are optionally incorporated in the invention to improve shelf life and safety for the user. The proposed composite has superior properties that allow for rapid degradation after disposal and high strength during use, unlike conventional biodegradable plastics, which tend to degrade slowly or have inconsistent degradation results. The invention effectively eliminates plastic pollution, encourages circular bioeconomy use and transforms agriculture and marine biomass wastes into high value sustainable packaging.
