Abstract: ABSTRACT BIODEGRADABLE FOAM SHEET AND FILM DERIVED FROM SEAWEED-BASED POLYSACCHARIDES AND METHOD OF PREPARATION THEREOF. The present invention relates to a biodegradable hybrid foam sheet and film derived from seaweed polysaccharides extracted from Gracilaria edulis. The invention comprises extraction of seaweed-derived polysaccharides, preparation of a chitosan-containing gel and a polyvinyl alcohol-containing gel, followed by blending to generate an aerated formulation. Upon standing, the formulation separates into an upper foam-rich layer and a lower liquid-rich layer. The upper foam-rich layer is dried to obtain a soft, flexible, lightweight and biodegradable open-cell foam sheet, while the lower liquid-rich layer is dried separately to produce a transparent biodegradable film. The developed foam sheet exhibits porous morphology, satisfactory mechanical strength, thermal stability and moisture-responsive characteristics, making it suitable for packaging and cushioning applications. The invention provides an environmentally sustainable alternative to petroleum-derived packaging foams and enables simultaneous production of two biodegradable materials from a single seaweed-based formulation.
